Duplicate content is now more of an issue than ever for site owners, after Google’s recent algorithm update. The update, being dubbed the ‘dupe content update,’ fulfils the search engine’s promise to begin cracking down on search engine spam this year, as hinted at by Google guru Matt Cutts.

Cutts, who announced the update on his blog and via Twitter, had earlier hinted at the focus of the new update when discussing Google’s plans for 2011. According to the Google guru, the search engine’s spam team plan to be even stricter on spam this year, trying to improve results which have slipped slightly in the recent past.

The recent update is certainly a step forward for Google’s spam team. The update has affected thousands of web pages, and although it has prompted the usual round of complaints, it has been received with a surprising amount of equanimity. Webmaster forums teemed with calls for help shortly after the update came into affect, but site owners were more likely to curse content scrapers than Google itself. Scraping, which is responsible for the major portion of content theft, is what poses the greatest danger to a site’s ranking after the update. You can discuss scraping and duplicate content with us at SEO.co.uk.

There haven’t been many surprises for SEO in the update, but it has certainly placed more emphasis on the need for quality content in SEO. Most site owners who are already aware of search engine optimisation issues won’t notice any major changes, being already likely to be watchful for duplicate content issues.
