Are you about to shop for some supplies that you need at your new office? One of the things that you may need if your main line of business is in manufacturing would be a barcode printer. This is an output device that will print tags that you can use to identify your items. It uses the technology of thermal transfer or direct thermal technology. Such a device became famous when the barcode technology was implemented by many companies as well. The printer is an important tool that will determine the barcode’s readability.
In order to avoid problems that will likely be complained by customers to the IT help desk software, you need to shop for a quality printer. There are basically two types of them as based on the method of printing that they use – direct thermal printer and the thermal transfer printer.
Direct Thermal Printers
These printers use toner, ink, or ribbon. When printing, images are directly printed on labels and tags. To do the job, they use chemically-treated and heat-reactive barcode label that immediately turns to black once it has been impressed with the thermal printhead of the device. By being sensitive to heat and abrasion, these are only ideal for temporary, general purpose, and indoor barcode labeling.
Thermal Transfer Printers
These make use of a ribbon and printhead to create accurate barcode images. The process of printing involves the use of the thermal printhead to impress the image on the ribbon which will then be transferred to the label or tags. The resulting images are expected to be of quality and high durability. Label materials would include paper and polyester.
There are printers though that can print using both direct thermal and thermal transfer methods.
